Employment insurance reaches fewer Canadians as gig work and part-time employment reshape labour market

The group says EI mainly supports people with stable full-time jobs, making it harder for workers with irregular hours or multiple jobs to qualify. Food Banks Canada CEO Kirstin Beardsley says the outdated system is leaving many Canadians struggling as living costs stay high.

EI currently pays about 55 per cent of a worker’s insured earnings while they are unemployed.
