Canada Imposes 10% Tariff on Canned Vegetable Imports for Up to 200 Days

The tariff took effect immediately and can remain in place for up to 200 days. Imports from the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile, and certain developing countries are exempt under Canada’s trade agreements.

Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the measure is meant to support Canadian growers and processors while maintaining food security and affordable prices.

Industry groups and some opposition politicians welcomed the move, saying it could help prevent an increase in low-cost imports from countries looking for new markets after facing U.S. trade barriers.

The federal government says the tariff is temporary while the Canadian International Trade Tribunal investigates whether increased imports of canned and frozen vegetables are harming Canada’s domestic industry. A final decision is expected in September.
