Canada’s economy shed 18,000 jobs in April, pushing the national unemployment rate to its highest level in six months.

Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.9 per cent in April, the highest level in six months, as the economy lost 18,000 jobs, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

Most of the losses were in full-time work, while part-time jobs increased slightly. Since the start of 2026, Canada has lost more than 100,000 jobs overall, showing continued weakness in the labour market.

The goods-producing sector, which has been affected by U.S. tariffs and trade uncertainty, saw major job losses in April. However, health care and social assistance jobs increased.

Economists say the job market is still struggling and expect difficult conditions for workers and job seekers to continue throughout the year.
