U.S. President Donald Trump unveils 50% tariffs on countries supplying Iran with weapons

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that countries supplying weapons to Iran will face a 50% tariff on all goods sent to the United States, with no exemptions. He announced the move in a social media post just hours after agreeing to a two-week ceasefire with Tehran.

Trump did not explain which law he would use. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled he went too far in using emergency powers to impose broad tariffs.

He did not name specific countries, but China and Russia have been linked to helping Iran’s military, though both deny recent involvement.

Experts say Trump could try other trade laws, but they would take time. New tariffs could also increase tensions with China ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Meanwhile, U.S. imports from Russia have dropped since the war in Ukraine, though some key materials are still being traded.
