U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says its agents in Canada do not carry guns, after concerns about a possible presence at upcoming FIFA World Cup games.
The agency says its Homeland Security Investigations unit works with Canadian officials on cases like drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, and human trafficking. However, these agents do not make arrests or carry out searches in Canada.
ICE has five offices in the country, including in Toronto and Vancouver, both set to host World Cup matches.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has opposed any ICE presence at the games. Federal officials also say ICE has no legal authority in Canada.
