Coldest Night of the Year 2026 walk raises over $140K for local charities

THUNDER BAY — The 2026 Coldest Night of the Year walk raised more than $140,880 to help people in the community facing hunger, poverty, addiction and homelessness.

Hundreds of residents took part in the two- and five-kilometre winter walk on Saturday in support of Grace Place. The total passed the original $100,000 goal.

Anna Sarpiya joined the walk for the first time with Redwood Park Church, which raised more than $14,500. She said she wanted to help raise awareness about the struggles many people face.

Jason Cunningham, who attends The Summit Church, also joined to support what he called “a good cause.” He said he has seen the work Grace Place does and the difference it makes.

Event director Gary Macsemchuk said this was the first time the fundraiser had passed its goal on walk day. About 433 people took part this year, up from around 400 last year.

Macsemchuk said the event is one of Grace Place’s biggest fundraisers, making up about 15 per cent of its yearly budget. The money helps keep the building running and supports programs like community meals and the Out of the Cold shelter program, which provides thousands of overnight stays each year.
