Canada and Japan Sign New Partnership Agreement Covering Defence, Energy, and Trade

Canada and Japan have signed a new strategic partnership aimed at strengthening co-operation on defence, energy, trade and technology.

Mark Carney met with Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo on Friday, where the two leaders announced plans to work more closely on issues such as cyber security, Arctic safety and climate change.

Carney said the two countries share strong ties and common values, which will help them build a more ambitious partnership in the future. He also spoke briefly in Japanese during the announcement.

The two leaders highlighted the strong economic relationship between Canada and Japan, which includes about $40 billion in trade and joint efforts to patrol the Pacific Ocean.

Carney also said a Team Canada trade mission will visit Japan in the coming months.

Under the agreement, the countries will increase co-operation on emergency response, hold joint coast guard exercises and work together to fight illegal fishing in the North Pacific.

They also plan to expand trade in energy projects, including liquefied natural gas, and strengthen collaboration on critical minerals to help secure stable supplies.
