Minnesota child, 5, reunites with family after release from Texas detention facility

A five-year-old boy and his father who were detained by immigration officers in Minnesota and taken to Texas have been released and are back home. Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Conejo Arias, were detained in a Minneapolis suburb on Jan. 20 and held at a detention centre in Dilley, Texas. Their release followed a judge’s order, according to the office of Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro.

Images of the child surrounded by officers sparked public outrage. A U.S. judge criticized the government’s actions, saying the case showed poor judgment and caused harm to a child. Federal officials have denied claims that officers used the boy to lure his mother outside, saying instead that the father ran and left the child in a vehicle.
