Canadians warned against travel to Mexico amid surge in violence following cartel leader’s death

Canadians in Mexico are being told to stay indoors as violence spreads in parts of the country.

Officials say the state of Jalisco, home to the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, is unsafe after the reported killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” He led the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

After his death, cartel members blocked roads and set vehicles on fire in several areas. Global Affairs Canada urged Canadians to shelter in place, avoid attention and follow local authorities’ instructions.

Several airlines, including Air Canada and WestJet, cancelled flights to and from Puerto Vallarta. Flair, Air Transat and Porter also suspended or diverted service.

Mexican and U.S. officials say American intelligence helped in the operation. Authorities call the killing a major win against organized crime, though violence has increased in the short term.
