President Donald Trump has withdrawn Canada’s invitation to join his proposed “Board of Peace,” adding new strain to relations between the two countries.
In a social media post Thursday, Trump said Prime Minister Mark Carney would no longer be welcome on the board, which was first meant to help oversee the end of the war in Gaza and later expanded to include other global issues. Trump did not explain his decision, but it came after Carney criticized the plan and rejected Trump’s claim that “Canada lives because of the United States.”
“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney said earlier that day. His office did not immediately comment on Trump’s move.
The decision deepens tensions between the two leaders, who have also clashed over issues such as Greenland and trade. Trump says more than 50 countries are expected to join the Gaza plan, though several key allies, including France and the United Kingdom, have refused to take part.
