Microsoft Move Leaves 400 Million Users Uncertain

Microsoft is trying to reassure hundreds of millions of Office users after a viral online backlash caused confusion about the future of its software.

The confusion started when viral posts on X, including one from Perplexity AI, claimed Microsoft had “killed” the Office brand by renaming it the “Microsoft 365 Copilot app,” turning 400 million people into “AI users” overnight. The post received nearly four million views, even though it was misleading.

In reality, Microsoft did not rename Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. The company says only the Office “hub” app was renamed — first to Microsoft 365 and now to Microsoft 365 Copilot — to reflect the addition of its AI assistant, Copilot. The core Office apps remain the same.

Still, critics say Microsoft’s naming choices are confusing. Tech sites like Windows Latest and The Verge argue the constant rebranding makes it hard for users to understand what’s actually changing. Others also warn that Microsoft’s push to add AI features raises privacy and security concerns.

In short, Office isn’t dead — but Microsoft’s branding has left many users scratching their heads.
