Zelensky says U.S. offers 15-year security guarantee in peace plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that the United States is offering a 15-year security guarantee in a new peace proposal aimed at ending Ukraine’s war with Russia.

Speaking to reporters, Zelensky said he wants a much longer commitment — up to 50 years — to better deter future Russian attacks. He said U.S. President Donald Trump told him the request would be considered.

Zelensky added that any security guarantee would need approval from the U.S. Congress and would be paired with an economic package, including increased U.S. business involvement in Ukraine, reconstruction support, and talks toward a free trade deal.

The comments came after Zelensky met Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Sunday. Both leaders said progress was made, with Zelensky stating that about 90 per cent of the 20-point peace plan has been agreed upon.

However, major issues remain unresolved, including troop withdrawals and the future of eastern Ukraine and the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
