Cheese Recalled in Ontario Over Listeria Risk
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for a type of cheese sold in Ontario because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria.
The recall affects Mount Becher Buffalo Medium Cheese, made by Natural Pastures Cheese Company. The CFIA warns people: “Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected product.”
What Cheese Is Being Recalled?
The cheese being recalled comes in 150-gram packages from batch number 854 263 and has a best-before date of October 2, 2025.
It was sold in Ontario.
What Is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can be found in places like soil, water, plants, and animal waste. It can get into food in several ways — for example, through water sprayed on crops or from fertilizers made with manure.
Eating food with Listeria can cause an illness called listeriosis. Symptoms usually start within three days and can feel like food poisoning. This includes fever, nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and sometimes headaches, muscle pain, or constipation.
If you think you might be sick after eating this cheese, contact your doctor.
How to Report a Food Issue
You can report food safety concerns to the CFIA online. There is a form you can fill out to let them know about any health or safety problems.
You can also check the latest food recall alerts by visiting the Health Canada or CFIA websites.
