Typhoon Champi has strengthened into a Category 5 super typhoon over the Philippine Sea, with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (258 km/h), according to the U.S. National Weather Service. The storm was moving away from land by late Monday local time.
Champi previously passed near Guam, prompting emergency requests from the governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. U.S. President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Guam, allowing federal assistance to support local response efforts.
Airports, harbours and some health facilities were closed in the affected territories. Relief supplies could take three to five days to arrive, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Meanwhile, former hurricane Trudy weakened into a tropical storm after bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast.
Trudy had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (100 km/h) and was moving west at 6 mph (9 km/h). Forecasters expected it to move farther from the coast, though more rain was possible in areas already soaked by earlier storms.
