B.C. NDP Leader David Eby is promising to raise taxes on people earning more than $1 million a year if his party is re-elected, with the money going toward health care.
The proposed changes would create a new top tax rate of 24.5 per cent for income above $1 million. The NDP says the changes would affect less than four per cent of earners and raise about $1 billion.
Eby said the money would help fund health care and lower costs for families.
The B.C. Conservatives criticized the plan, saying higher taxes could make it harder to recruit doctors and specialists to the province. The party has promised not to raise taxes.
B.C. Green Leader Emily Lowan also criticized the proposal, saying it would not tax wealth held in stocks and real estate.
The announcement comes as Eby campaigns ahead of the Oct. 24 provincial election. His party has also promised measures to lower grocery and fuel costs.
