2 dead, 2 injured after crash outside B.C. mall following driver’s apparent medical emergency

Two people are dead and two others are injured after a vehicle struck pedestrians outside a B.C. mall Wednesday morning.

Police believe the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash, which happened in the parking lot of Tsawwassen Mills on Tsawwassen First Nation lands shortly before 10:30 a.m.

The crash happened during a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation community walk. The Delta Police Department said the collision was not related to the event.

Witness Rafael Saenz said he saw several people on the ground after the crash and described the scene as traumatic. He said more than a dozen emergency vehicles and several helicopters were at the scene as paramedics treated the victims.

B.C. Emergency Health Services said it sent 12 ambulances and two air ambulances to the area.

The Tsawwassen First Nation issued an emergency alert asking people taking part in the community walk to leave the area and avoid the crash scene.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a social media post that two elders had died in the crash. He offered his condolences to their families, the injured and the wider community.

B.C. NDP Leader David Eby also expressed his support for the Tsawwassen community while speaking at a Truth and Reconciliation event in Kamloops.

Police said there is no ongoing risk to the public. The investigation remains in its early stages, and officers are asking anyone with information or video from the area at the time of the crash to come forward.

The Tsawwassen First Nation later thanked police, emergency responders and community members who helped during the incident.
