Google passkeys are replacing Passwords.

Google has announced that users can now create and utilize a passkey to directly sign into their Google accounts, replacing the need for a traditional password and two-factor authentication.

The passkeys employ cryptographic technology that is stored on the user’s device, enabling sign-in using existing PIN or biometric unlock data on their phones.

According to a Google blog post, this release is a significant step towards a cross-industry initiative that began over a decade ago, and Google is committed to making passkeys the future of secure sign-in for all. The company hopes that other web and app developers will adopt this technology and leverage their deployment as a model.

The development of passkeys has been fast-tracked through a partnership between tech giants Google, Apple, and Microsoft. In collaboration with the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, the companies aim to pave the way for a future without passwords.
