Private Plasma Clinic Pauses All Plasma Collection Across Canada

Health Canada has issued six non-compliance notices to Grifols clinics in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba since 2022. An inspection is still underway at a clinic in Etobicoke, Ont.

Calls to end paid plasma donations increased after two people died following plasma donations at Grifols’ Winnipeg clinic. The family of one donor said an autopsy found she had an enlarged heart and that the donation placed severe stress on it.

Health Canada said there was no link between the deaths and the donation process.

Grifols said donor safety has “never been compromised” and that it is working with Health Canada to address the concerns.

Health Canada said the temporary closures will not affect the safety or security of Canada’s blood supply. Collection sites will reopen only after the concerns are addressed.
