TORONTO — Ontario has changed its social assistance rules to prevent people without legal immigration status from receiving benefits.
The province amended regulations for Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program, saying taxpayer-funded assistance should go to people who are legally allowed to live in Canada.
The changes also make people in Canada on temporary permits, including student visas and work permits, ineligible for social assistance.
Premier Doug Ford first announced the plan last month, saying the province would continue to support people facing financial hardship but not those living in Canada illegally.
