A British woman’s discovery of a 35-year-old Mars bar has gone viral online, with many people comparing its size to the chocolate bars sold today.

Victoria Gordon, owner of a specialist cleaning company, found the bar while clearing out the apartment of an elderly woman in Lincoln, England, on Aug. 5. The apartment was filled with boxes and bags, and the Mars bar had an expiry date of 1991.

Gordon said the bar immediately caught her attention because it was about the size of her hand.

The 62.5-gram chocolate bar is about 56 per cent heavier than the 40-gram Mars bar sold today. Gordon posted a video of her discovery on TikTok, where it received more than 40,000 likes and 1,500 comments.

She later shared another video comparing the old bar with a modern one, sparking a wider discussion about shrinkflation and rising living costs.

Mars Inc. said food manufacturers are facing higher costs across their operations and supply chains. The company said the recipe has remained unchanged but that bar sizes and packaging have changed over the past 35 years because of consumer demand, manufacturing costs and cocoa prices.

Gordon said she plans to keep the old Mars bar, although she has no plans to find out whether it is still edible.
