Anemki Wajiw Powwow Brings Culture and Tradition to Indigenous Peoples Day

THUNDER BAY — Hundreds of people gathered at Anemki Wajiw on Sunday as Fort William First Nation held its annual powwow to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.

After some uncertainty due to the weather, crowds arrived throughout the day to enjoy traditional dancing, drumming and cultural teachings.

Powwow co-chair Shannon Young said the event is an important way for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together and celebrate traditions that have been passed down for generations.

Dancers from across the region took part in the gathering, including many from Fort William First Nation. Head dancers Georgina and Kelvin Redsky led the grand entry and shared teachings about Indigenous culture and the importance of respect, community and passing knowledge on to future generations.

The powwow also highlighted traditional regalia and Indigenous customs, while bringing people together to learn, celebrate and honour Indigenous heritage.
