Ontario city records highest mortgage delinquency rate in Canada

New data from Equifax shows mortgage delinquency rates are rising across Ontario, with missed mortgage payments increasing 52 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to last year.

Brampton has the highest mortgage delinquency rate in Canada at 0.64 per cent — more than double the national average.

Experts say many homeowners are struggling with higher mortgage renewal rates, lower home prices, rising unemployment, and debt taken on during the pandemic housing boom.

Equifax also reported that average non-mortgage debt climbed to $82,400, up 19 per cent from 2024. At the same time, homeowner insolvencies rose more than 11 per cent between late 2025 and early 2026.

While the peak mortgage renewal period has passed, Equifax says many Canadians will still face higher payments throughout 2026, putting continued financial pressure on households.
