A gunman was killed after opening fire near a White House security checkpoint on Saturday evening, officials said. The suspect, identified by U.S. media as 21-year-old Nasire Best, reportedly had a history of mental health issues and was known to law enforcement.
The shooting happened near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., close to the White House. Officials said the man pulled a gun from his bag and started shooting, leading Secret Service agents to return fire.
The suspect was taken to hospital, where he later died. One bystander was injured, but no officers were hurt.
U.S. President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time and was not harmed. He later praised Secret Service officers for their quick response.
Reporters nearby were rushed indoors after shots were heard, while emergency crews responded to the scene. Officials continue to investigate the incident.
