Manitoba health officials are warning the public about a new measles exposure site at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital.
The province says people who were in the emergency department waiting room or minor treatment areas between 1:05 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. on Thursday may have been exposed.
Officials are asking those individuals to check their vaccination records and make sure they are up to date on the measles vaccine. People who are not immunized and may have been exposed could qualify for preventive treatment within six days and should contact a health-care provider.
A full list of exposure locations is available on the provincial website.
So far this year, Manitoba has reported 568 confirmed and 74 probable measles cases, already surpassing last year’s totals.
Measles spreads through droplets in the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus can stay in the air for hours. Symptoms include cough, runny nose, fever, and red eyes, and usually appear one to three weeks after exposure.
