Residents of Sandy Beach, Alta., remain on evacuation alert as wildfire destroys homes

Residents of Sandy Beach, Alberta, are on edge as a wildfire has destroyed several homes and forced officials to declare a state of emergency. The fire is affecting areas along Lake Shore Drive near Sandy Lake, where at least three homes have been lost and another damaged. No injuries have been reported.

More than 60 firefighters from nearby communities responded, finding cabins fully engulfed in flames that spread to trees and grass. Crews worked overnight to contain the fire, which officials say started in one home before spreading. While the fire is now under control, strong winds forecast by Environment Canada could cause it to spread again.

A fire ban is now in place, and residents may be evacuated if conditions worsen. Sandy Beach is about 65 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
