RCMP issue renewed spring safety warning following suspected drowning in Banff National Park

The RCMP are warning visitors to stay safe after a recent rise in rescues in Banff National Park, including a suspected drowning involving a visitor from the United States.

On May 1, police say a man jumped into fast-moving water below Johnston Canyon and did not resurface. Search teams from the RCMP and Parks Canada looked for him but were unable to find him. The search has now been suspended due to dangerous water conditions.

This incident is one of several recent rescues in the park. In April, multiple hikers had to be saved after getting lost, stuck in deep snow, or suffering from exposure in cold conditions.

Officials say winter-like hazards are still present in the mountains, even as temperatures rise. Many trails remain icy and covered in snow, making them difficult and unsafe.

Police are reminding visitors to stay on marked trails, respect closures, and avoid entering rivers or lakes, even if the water looks calm.
