Local man sentenced to 7 years for “abhorrent” sexual offences

THUNDER BAY — A judge has sentenced Frank Macchi to seven years in prison for sexual offences against minors that happened between 2001 and 2002.

Justice Bruce Fitzpatrick said the sentence reflects how serious and “abhorrent” the crimes were. Macchi will serve four years for offences against one victim and three years for another.

A jury found him guilty in October 2025. One charge was stayed under the Kienapple principle, which prevents multiple convictions for the same act.

The defence asked for a shorter sentence and submitted letters of support, but the judge said the crimes were too serious, especially because they happened in isolated places.

The court also ordered Macchi to register as a sex offender for 20 years, give a DNA sample, and follow a 10-year weapons ban. He is banned for life from being within two kilometres of the victims’ homes.

A publication ban protects the victims’ identities.
