A First Nations leader in British Columbia says the future of DRIPA represents a “defining moment” in the province’s history.

A First Nations leader says proposed changes to British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) could seriously weaken the law.

Robert Phillips of the First Nations Summit warns the amendments would undo years of progress and damage relationships between the province and First Nations. He says leaders are even considering legal action or protests if the changes move forward.

His comments come ahead of a meeting with Premier David Eby, who argues the changes would give elected officials more control over reconciliation.

Phillips says the future of DRIPA is a defining moment for British Columbia and hopes the government reconsiders.
