Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday that Canada supports the United States’ efforts to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Speaking in Mumbai during a trade trip, he called Iran a major source of unrest in the Middle East and criticized its human rights record.
Carney said Canada is not involved in the military action and does not plan to join it. He noted that Canada has long pushed Iran to end its nuclear program and has listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group.
He also voiced support for Israel’s right to defend itself.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand urged Canadians in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon to consider leaving while flights are still available. She warned that Canada has very limited ability to help people in Iran because it does not have an embassy there.
