Canadian travellers with upcoming trips to Mexico reconsider plans amid safety concerns

Canadian airlines have restarted flights to parts of Mexico after violence briefly disrupted service. Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Porter Airlines resumed flights to Puerto Vallarta, while Flair Airlines plans to restart soon.

The violence happened after cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, was killed in a military operation. Canada has shelter-in-place warnings for the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Global Affairs Canada says no new incidents have been reported, but travellers should still be careful.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says people should decide day by day if they want to travel.

Some travellers are unsure. Cindy Redmile from Quesnel, B.C., is worried about taking her daughter to Cancun next week. Others, like Lauretta Prince from Fort St. James, B.C., still hope to travel to Puerto Vallarta and will decide closer to their trip.

Travel insurance may not cover cancellations unless people bought special coverage. Experts say travellers should check with their airline or travel agent before making a decision.
