Ginger ale, often seen as a home remedy for sore throats and upset stomachs, is no longer available to patients at The Ottawa Hospital. The hospital says it removed the drink because it has little nutritional value and is high in sugar.
A spokesperson said the hospital wants to focus on healthier food and drink options for patients and families. Current drink choices include water, broth, Pedialyte, and apple, orange, and cranberry juice. The hospital is also reviewing its menu to reduce ultra-processed foods and added sugars.
Montfort Hospital and Queensway-Carleton Hospital say ginger ale is still available to their patients.
The change comes as The Ottawa Hospital works to improve patient meals by adding more high-protein and high-fibre options. The hospital’s food services team prepares more than 3,000 meals each day for about 1,200 patients.
