Carney pledges $2.5B in new support for Ukraine during talks with Zelenskyy

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Halifax on Friday for his second visit to Canada this year, as the war in Ukraine continues.

Carney said Canada remains committed to supporting Ukraine. Since Russia’s invasion, Canada has provided nearly $22 billion in aid, including more than $12 billion in direct financial support for recovery and rebuilding.

The new funding will help support international loans, ease Ukraine’s debt, strengthen energy security, and fund reconstruction projects. Canada has also recently announced $200 million in military support through NATO and an additional $50 million for drone capabilities.

At a news conference Saturday, both leaders said the support is meant to help Ukraine defend itself, rebuild communities, reunite families, and work toward a lasting peace.
