Canada Eases Certain Counter-Tariffs

Most of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $60 billion worth of American goods were removed today.

These tariffs were put in place during the U.S. trade war, after former President Donald Trump placed heavy tariffs on Canadian products.

Trump later reduced those tariffs so they only applied to goods not included in the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade deal.

On August 22, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would do the same, explaining that the extra tariffs were creating problems in trade talks.

Some tariffs are still in place on U.S. steel and aluminum, because those products are still facing tough American taxes.

After meeting with U.S. officials last week, Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said discussions are moving forward, but no final deal has been reached yet.
