Demolition of Victoriaville Complex to Start Next Week

Demolition of Victoriaville Centre Begins Monday

A major step in revitalizing Thunder Bay’s downtown south core will start next week, as crews begin tearing down the Victoriaville Centre.

The demolition, part of the City’s Reimagine Victoriaville project, will reopen Victoria Avenue to traffic for the first time in decades. Work starts Monday and will include removing the roof, tearing down the second-floor mezzanine, taking apart the skywalk, and clearing the mall’s floor slab.

The Victoriaville Centre officially closed to the public on July 18. Since then, Victoria Avenue has been closed at McKellar Street, and Archibald Street has been closed at Miles Street.

“All mall entrances are now closed, except for the parkade skywalk, which remains open for accessible entry to the Civic Centre,” the City said in a statement. “Please follow all signs and avoid fenced-off areas for your safety.”

Businesses in the area will remain open during demolition. St. Joseph’s Care Group can be reached through the McKellar Mall entrance near Centennial Square, and Tammy’s Alterations has moved to South McKellar Mall.

To reach City services at the Civic Centre, residents should use the south McKellar Street entrance next to Centennial Square. For accessible entry, the parkade skywalk ramp on the second floor is available.

Crews will work extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., in line with City noise rules. Alternative routes will stay in place until October 31, 2026.
