WestJet Cancels Two Alberta–U.S. Routes Citing Shift in Travel Demand
WestJet has cancelled two planned direct routes from Alberta to the United States, citing a noticeable shift in traveler preferences away from U.S. destinations.
The Calgary-based airline announced that its seasonal summer service between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and New York’s LaGuardia Airport will not operate in 2025. In addition, a planned summer route connecting Edmonton to Orlando International Airport has been suspended.
Affected passengers on the Calgary–LaGuardia route have been informed of the changes and are being offered alternative flights into New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to a WestJet spokesperson.
“There has been a shift in bookings from the U.S. toward other sun destinations such as Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as transatlantic locations,” said WestJet spokesperson Josh Yeats. “It is common across the aviation industry to adjust schedules based on guest demand.”
This move comes amid growing signs that Canadians are reconsidering travel to the U.S. Recent tensions between the two countries have played a role, as President Donald Trump has threatened tariffs against Canada and made controversial comments suggesting it become America’s 51st state.
Travel agency Flight Centre Travel Group Canada reported a 40% drop in February 2025 bookings to U.S. cities compared to the same month in 2024. Additionally, 20% of clients have cancelled upcoming U.S. trips in the last three months.
Adding to concerns, the Canadian government recently updated its travel advisory for the U.S., warning Canadians that they must register if their stay exceeds 30 days. Non-compliance could result in fines or misdemeanor charges, Ottawa cautioned.
