Ford to Scrap Starlink-Ontario Deal Regardless of Tariff Outcome
Ford Stands Firm on Starlink Contract Cancellation Despite Tariff Resolution
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has reaffirmed that his decision to terminate a contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service is final and will not be reversed, even if Canada’s trade dispute with the United States is resolved.
The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of 25% tariffs on most Canadian imports, escalating tensions between the neighboring countries. In retaliation, Ontario removed U.S. alcohol from LCBO shelves, banned American firms from bidding on provincial contracts, and scrapped a $100 million deal with SpaceX to provide Starlink satellite internet to rural and northern communities.
Ford cited Musk’s close ties to Trump as a factor in his decision, criticizing the billionaire and suggesting that the Ontario university he attended should be “embarrassed” to count him as an alumnus.
This marks the second time Ford has canceled the Starlink contract in recent weeks. Initially, he withdrew from the agreement as a response to anticipated tariffs but reversed course when they failed to materialize. Now, Ford insists the cancellation is permanent, regardless of any future changes to trade policy.
“It’s done,” Ford told Global News on Wednesday. “We’re not going back there, it’s done.”
The financial implications of the cancellation remain unclear, and the Ford government has yet to disclose potential penalties or legal costs. However, Ford maintains that the decision is a matter of principle and is prepared for potential litigation.
“If they come out and sue us, so be it,” he stated. “I want to inflict as much pain as we possibly can until we get to a deal.”
Ontario’s opposition parties, including the Liberals and NDP, have previously urged Ford to abandon the contract and questioned why it was signed in the first place.
Musk’s response to Ontario’s initial threat to cancel the deal was minimal, with the billionaire simply posting “Oh well” on social media.
