Thousands of NÜTRL Tumblers Recalled Following Numerous Illness Reports

A promotional NÜTRL-branded tumbler, recalled in Canada earlier this month, has been linked to multiple reports of adverse health effects, according to an updated notice released on Friday.

Health Canada’s recall notice states that approximately 33,000 tumblers were distributed to consumers as promotional gifts at various liquor commissions and retailers across the country between April 29 and May 17, 2024.

The original notice, posted on May 19, indicated that the recall was due to a manufacturing defect that could cause the tumblers to release contaminants. The updated notice provides further details on the potential health risks associated with these tumblers.

“Based on testing to date, some of the tumblers may contain a chemical solution that was trapped between the inner walls of the tumbler, which contains some levels of sulfuric and phosphoric acids,” the new notice says.

“This solution may release when the tumbler is filled with liquid, posing a potential risk of serious injury.”

The ingestion of these chemicals is associated with a range of health effects, including “burning of the lips, tongue, throat, stomach, and/or other tissue damage, as well as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea,” the notice states.

Additionally, contact with the skin may result in reactions such as blistering, burns, pain, and redness.

The recalled NÜTRL-branded 30 oz. (887 ml) stainless steel cup, manufactured in China by Sunscope, was distributed as a promotional gift with the purchase of a case of 12 or 15 NÜTRL seltzers.

As of May 23, Sunscope reported receiving 43 complaints from consumers who experienced symptoms after using the recalled product. The most common symptoms included headache, nausea, abdominal cramping or pain, and diarrhea.

Health Canada advises consumers to immediately stop using the affected product and contact Sedgwick, the small claims assistance service, for help.

Consumers can call Sedgwick toll-free at 1-866-846-1778, available 24/7, or email [email protected].

Health Canada also encourages consumers to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms.
