Sentencing Hearing for Former RCMP Intelligence Official Found Guilty in Classified Information Case

A judge is set to consider divergent arguments regarding the sentencing of former RCMP intelligence official Cameron Jay Ortis.

During a hearing scheduled for today and Friday, Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger will assess various perspectives in order to determine an appropriate sentence for Ortis, who was convicted of violating Canada’s secrets law.

In November, Ortis was found guilty by jurors on three counts of breaching the Security of Information Act and one count of attempted breach. Additionally, he was convicted of breach of trust and fraudulent use of a computer.

After the jury’s decision, prosecutor Judy Kliewer hinted at the Crown’s intention to pursue a prison sentence, potentially exceeding 20 years.

Mark Ertel, Ortis’s defense attorney, indicated that the defense would argue that their client has already spent a significant amount of time behind bars during the proceedings.
