Best Buy issues a recall of nearly 1 million pressure cookers following 17 reported burn injuries.

Best Buy is initiating a recall of almost 1 million pressure cookers and their respective inner pots, owing to a flaw that can lead to the expulsion of scalding food, presenting burn risks.

The pressure cookers, marketed under the Insignia brand, feature inaccurate volume markings inside their inner pots. This inaccuracy could potentially lead consumers to overfill the pots. Consequently, when these pressure cookers are vented or opened, hot food and liquids may be forcefully expelled from the appliance. This information was detailed in a notification published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on a Thursday.

As of now, Best Buy has received 31 reports of incidents in which the cookers’ contents were forcefully discharged under pressure. These incidents include 17 reports of burn injuries, some of which were categorized as second-degree and severe burns.

The Insignia Multi-Function Pressure Cookers, totaling 930,000 units along with their inner pots sold separately as replacement parts, are part of the recall. They were available for purchase at Best Buy outlets across the nation, on Best Buy’s official website, and on Amazon from October 2017 to June of this year.

To identify the pressure cookers and inner pots subject to the recall, which come in both six- and eight-quart capacities, consumers should check their model numbers. The name “Insignia” is prominently displayed on the front of each unit and on its permanent label.

Individuals in possession of the affected appliances are advised to cease using them immediately, according to the CPSC. Affected consumers can get in touch with Best Buy to obtain a free replacement for the inner pot and floating locking valve.

Best Buy, headquartered in Richfield, Minnesota, has stipulated that pressure cookers returned to their physical stores will not be eligible for refunds or replacements, as mentioned in an announcement on their website. To obtain a replacement kit, individuals affected by this recall need to complete an online registration process. It’s important to note that only consumers who possess the pressure cooker subject to the recall, and not just the inner pot, are eligible for these replacements.

In a statement issued on Friday, Best Buy underscored its unwavering commitment to customer safety, noting that they are actively reaching out to customers who directly purchased the now-recalled products.
