Sending Christmas cards and letters will cost Canadians more starting in 2027.
The federal budget proposes increasing the price of a stamp from $1.44 to $2, followed by annual increases of seven per cent in the years ahead.
The government says the increase will bring Canada’s stamp prices closer to those in other OECD countries.
The budget estimates the change will cost the average consumer about $6 more per year and small businesses about $9.
The last stamp price increase came in 2025, when Canada Post raised the cost of a single stamp by 25 per cent, from $1.15 to $1.44. A book of stamps currently costs $1.24 per stamp.
The budget did not provide an exact date for the 2027 increase.
Government provides billions in support
The federal government is also providing $1.4 billion over two years to support Canada Post’s operations. Another $1.2 billion over seven years will help the corporation replace door-to-door mail delivery in urban areas with community mailboxes.
The government says traditional letter mail is declining and Canada Post’s current business model is no longer financially sustainable.
Canada Post delivered about two billion domestic letters in 2025, down from 5.5 billion in 2006.
