Former Canadian Armed Forces member Sean Ward, the 29-year-old accused in the shooting outside a Belleville synagogue, has died in hospital, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says.
Police say Ward exchanged gunfire with Belleville Police Const. Jeff Smith, who was on duty outside the synagogue Sunday evening as worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur. Ward was shot several times by police and taken to Kingston General Hospital, where he later died. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed Ward served as an infantry soldier with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry from 2017 until 2022, reaching the rank of corporal. He was not deployed during his military service.
Const. Smith remains in stable condition in hospital. The SIU is continuing its investigation into the shooting.
