Canada and Ukraine have signed a 100-year partnership focused on defence, security and building millions of drones to strengthen both countries’ military industries.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the agreement in Calgary on Thursday. The deal includes future co-operation in defence, trade, energy and critical minerals, with more details to be finalized in the coming months.
The partnership begins with new investments in drone production. Canada plans to build the industrial capacity to produce millions of drones within two years and create a faster system that allows military units to work directly with manufacturers.
Canada also announced up to $50 million to expand its fleet of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance drones, along with uncrewed ground vehicles. Canadian and Ukrainian companies will also work together to develop new drone and counter-drone technology.
In addition, Canada pledged $350 million for air defence interceptors, nearly $435 million in loan guarantees to support Ukraine’s energy security, $200 million for reconstruction loans, and up to $40.1 million for rehabilitation programs for Ukrainian veterans and their families.
