The British Columbia government has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a California court over the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.
B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma announced the legal action and said the province is working with the federal government to improve the regulation of artificial intelligence in Canada and around the world.
Sharma said California is the proper place to file the lawsuit because the province alleges OpenAI failed to alert law enforcement after identifying troubling conversations involving the shooter.
She said the government believes OpenAI knew there were serious warning signs in the chat but did not report them.
Sharma added that the province is supporting the families of the victims, who have also filed legal action in California. She said the goal is to help prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
