Sony announced Wednesday that it will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs starting in January 2028.
After that date, new titles will be sold through the PlayStation Store or as download codes from retailers. Sony said this change reflects shifting consumer habits, with digital game sales now far more common than physical copies.
The company added that games released before 2028 will still be available on disc and will not be affected.
Sony began reducing its focus on physical media with the launch of the PlayStation 5 in 2020, which included a digital-only version of the console.
The move has sparked concern among some gamers, who say it could hurt game collecting and the resale market. Industry analysts note that digital sales have grown sharply over the past decade, rising from about 13 per cent in 2013 to nearly 80 per cent in 2025.
The change has also led to speculation that the next PlayStation console, expected later in the decade, may be digital-only.
