Intercity Shopping Centre sold to new owners

THUNDER BAY — Intercity Shopping Centre has been sold to Montreal-based real estate company Leyad, which plans to redevelop the large former Sears space that has been empty since 2018.

Leyad said it is working to bring in several new national and international stores, including JD Sports, and will also finish work on the new Sport Chek location.

The company says it wants to modernize the mall and add new attractions such as entertainment spaces, indoor activities and services to make the mall more of a community hub.

Leyad president Henry Zavriyev said the company sees strong potential in Thunder Bay because of its steady economy and growing population.

Intercity Shopping Centre currently has about 90 tenants. The mall also announced temporary phone and email disruptions during the ownership transition.
