Amazon has officially launched a “completely new” service across Canada.
Alexa+, the company’s next-generation assistant powered by generative AI, is now fully available to Canadians at no extra cost for Amazon Prime members. An early access version began in 2025, but the rollout is now complete nationwide.
Amazon says Alexa+ is more advanced than the original Alexa. It is designed to be more conversational, more personalized, and better at helping users complete tasks.
According to Amazon, Canadians are already using Alexa+ more often than the older version, with users interacting about twice as much.
Alexa+ works on Alexa-enabled devices, in the Alexa mobile app, and through a web browser on Alexa.com. It is available in both English and French.
The assistant is built using large language models, which help it understand and respond in more natural ways. It can also remember context during conversations and handle more complex requests.
Users can use it for things like asking follow-up questions, discussing topics like music or news, and completing tasks such as booking restaurant tables through OpenTable or planning trips with services like Tripadvisor and Fodor’s. More features, including ride booking through Uber, are expected soon.
Non–Prime members can still try Alexa+ through the app or website. Users can activate it by saying, “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+” or visiting amazon.ca/alexaplus.
Amazon says it will continue improving the service over time.
