Manitoba Wildfire Evacuees Arrive Safely in Ontario
A group of people forced to leave their homes due to wildfires in Manitoba has arrived safely in Ontario.
Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) shared that 47 evacuees from the Pimicikamak Cree Nation reached Niagara Falls around 2 p.m. on Sunday. When they arrived, they were welcomed with hotel rooms and a hot meal.
More help is on the way, as another 200 people were expected to arrive in the Niagara region Sunday night. Up to 600 more are expected on Monday.
MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee thanked Ontario for helping the evacuees.
“This is the kind of teamwork we aim for in Manitoba,” he said in a news release. “Having hotel rooms ready makes it easier for us to take care of our people.”
He also said evacuees deserve to be treated with respect as they go through this difficult and stressful time.
Evacuations are still happening in Pimicikamak and Mathias Colomb Cree Nations.
