The fire ban in Thunder Bay has been lifted.
Deputy Fire Chief Dave Tarini announced that the ban was officially removed at 10 a.m. on Friday, following guidance from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
“They’ve seen a drop in wildfire risk across the region, especially in the Thunder Bay District, which is why they made that choice,” Tarini explained.
He also mentioned that while the availability of firefighting resources played a small role, the main reason for lifting the ban was the recent change in weather.
Tarini noted that local firefighters haven’t received many calls lately about grass or brush fires within city limits.
“Fire bans usually help reduce the number of human-caused fires, which was the goal, and in this case, it worked,” he said.
Even though outdoor fires are now allowed again, Tarini reminded people to be careful. A valid fire permit is still required, and everyone must follow the rules that come with it.
“We’re basically back to where we were before the fire ban,” he said. “So, all fire permit rules still apply.”
