Prime Minister Mark Carney will take part in his first question period on Wednesday, but he won’t continue a tradition started by the previous prime minister.
Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used to answer all the questions in the House of Commons every Wednesday. He did this to try to make the government more open and responsible.
However, someone from the Prime Minister’s Office says Carney won’t be doing the same thing.
Back in 2017, Trudeau said it was important for all members of Parliament—not just party leaders—to have the chance to ask him questions directly.
At the time, some people in other political parties wondered if this would let Trudeau avoid tough questions on other days of the week.
This Wednesday marks the first question period of the spring session. It follows the election of a new Speaker of the House, Francis Scarpaleggia, on Monday and a speech from the throne read by King Charles on Tuesday.
