Multiple Food Products Recalled in B.C. Due to Contaminants and Undeclared Allergens
Several food items sold in British Columbia have been added to Health Canada’s recall list this month, following the discovery of potential salmonella contamination, undeclared allergens, and foreign materials such as insects, stones, and wood fragments.
As of April 17, Captain’s Choice brand Shredded Coconut was recalled due to possible salmonella contamination. Health Canada warns that contaminated food may not show signs of spoilage but can still cause illness. Vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for serious, sometimes fatal infections. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, with long-term complications like severe arthritis also possible. The recall was prompted by test results and associated reports of illness.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is leading an investigation and ensuring retailers remove the affected items from store shelves.
